Background
I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Thurston Group at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology and affiliated with Magdalen College’s Calleva Research Centre. I obtained a BSc (Hons) in Molecular Biology at the University of St Andrews, before completing my DPhil at the University of Oxford, under the supervision of Professor Ivan Ahel. During my DPhil, I studied the function and regulation of a post-translation modification of proteins called ADP-ribosylation. Specifically, I studied how the timely reversal of ADP-ribosylation helps protect cells against genomic instability.
For my postdoctoral research in the Thurston group, I will investigate the host immune responses that restrict Burkholderia pseudomallei, the gram-negative bacterium responsible for the tropical disease melioidosis, a disease with a high fatality rate. My work will combine bioinformatics, mammalian genetics, and cell and molecular biology to uncover how host cells sense and defend against this pathogen, with the aim of identifying mechanisms that could inform new approaches to treating or preventing infection.
