Old Library

SCROLL

The collections in the Old Library are of national and international significance. Once reserved for the use of Fellows of Magdalen College, the Old Library is now more accessible to other members of Magdalen, the general public, and researchers from around the world. Find out how we are increasing access to our collections, online and in-person, in the following sections.

Virtual Tour

Step into the Old Library, wander between the shelves, and discover some of the greatest treasures in our collections

Exhibitions

We showcase material from our Library and Archives collections in fascinating exhibitions throughout the year on Wednesdays 2-4:30pm in the Old Library

Online Exhibitions

Can’t visit in-person, or want to look back at previous exhibitions? Many of our Old Library exhibitions have been converted to online exhibitions for the permanent enjoyment for all

Research and Enquiries

Researchers can make enquiries, request images, and are welcome to consult items from the Old Library by making an appointment in advance

Digitisation

We are working on digitising our medieval manuscripts and unique early printed books so that anyone can view them – anywhere, anytime

Reprographics

We offer a reprographics service for items from the Old Library. Users may request images from 1 item at a time with a total of up to 20 folios/pages free of charge.

To facilitate finding items, much of the Old Library collections have been catalogued, although it is still a work in progress
