a portrait of Rob Harris

Dr Rob Harris

Subject: English

Academic position: Fellow by Examination in English

Before coming to Magdalen, I read English at University College London and the University of Bristol, where I was subsequently a lecturer.

I have written about interactions between literature and art across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly on the relationship between impressionist painting and English poetry, which is the subject of my first monograph, After Impressionism: Poetry and Painting, 1874-1914 (Cambridge University Press, 2025). My current research is focused on how modernist writers (especially modernist poets) responded to the art of the Italian Renaissance.
