The social life of students at Magdalen revolves around the Junior and Middle Common Rooms (JCR and MCR, respectively). Both Common Rooms have annually elected committees who represent the students at College level, organise entertainment and welfare events and help run student facilities.
Alongside their academic studies, students at Magdalen are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. There is a wide variety of College societies for students to join at Magdalen, including The Florio Society, The Atkin Society, The Sherrington Society, The Magdalen College Trust, The Music Society, Magdalen College Swing Band, The Magdalen Players, and The Film Society (and more besides!). And with over 400 clubs and societies at University level too, there’s something for everyone.
Magdalen has some of the best sports facilities in the University, with excellent cricket, soccer, hockey and rugby pitches and tennis courts (hard and grass) all just a few minutes walk, via the water walks, from the main College. The Boathouse is situated on the River Thames (also known as the Isis as it flows through Oxford), just across Christ Church Meadow. Three superb squash courts were built in 1995 very close to the College centre, and are complete with showers, changing rooms and observation galleries. The cricket pavilion was renovated and extended in 1998, and the boathouse was renovated in 2000.
The College supports both women’s and men’s teams, where appropriate, for rowing, football, hockey, rugby, cricket, tennis, athletics, squash, fives, netball, basketball, badminton, pool — together with other sports if there is sufficient demand. The Captains and Secretaries of each of these clubs are elected annually.
The sports are financed by the Combined Clubs Fund (CCF) through grants to each club. The Combined Clubs Fund also assists towards the expenses of those who play in University teams (‘Blues’). Funds are allocated by the Senior Treasurer (a Fellow of the College) in conjunction with the MCR & JCR Sports Reps. and the Captains and Secretaries.
The Magdalen College Boat Club receives special additional support from the Friends of the MCBC, Old Members who take a special interest in the progress of the MCBC.
