By 31 July 2024

Students with conditional offers requiring completion of qualifications other than A Levels, Advanced Highers, the Cambridge Pre-U or the International Baccalaureate must arrange for evidence of those qualifications to reach the College no later than noon on 31 July 2024. Certificates not issued in English must be accompanied by a legally certified translation into English.

Non-native English-speaking students with offers that include a condition to meet one of the English language requirements listed on the University website must provide documented evidence of having met this requirement no later than noon on 31 July 2024.

August

Following publication of the main A Level, Advanced Higher and Cambridge Pre-U results in mid-August, the College will send by email a Freshers’ information pack to all students with confirmed places. We are not able to send this pack earlier in the year, if, for example, you hold an unconditional offer. The pack will contain important information about arriving in Oxford including forms that must be completed by you and returned to the College by post by a date in early September. Please notify the College as soon as possible if you will be away in August and let us know the date you will return. It is important that your pack is dealt with in good time before your arrival at Oxford.

Information for Freshers

Arrival

Freshers’ week will commence on Sunday 6 October 2024, and you will be asked to arrive by 5pm on that day. If you have essential reasons (eg. limited flight availability) for needing to arrive earlier than this date you may contact the Home Bursar by 8th September to discuss this.

Accommodation and allocation

The College assumes that all First years will live in College accommodation unless you have contacted us by 1st September to request permission to live out (please note that there are certain residency requirements that you must meet if you intend to live out). First year accommodation is allocated on a randomised basis (administered by the Conference and Accommodation Office) and you will be given your room details when you arrive on Sunday 6 October. You do not need to apply for accommodation in your first year and you are not able to request a specific location. In the subsequent years of your course you will be able to choose your room from the accommodation available to your year group, by a ballot system. Students who, on the grounds of religion or disability, have particular accommodation needs should contact the Admissions Office directly by noon on 1st September (or, for students with disabilities, as soon as their condition has been formally diagnosed) and give details of what those specific needs are. Please do not delay in contacting us; the sooner we can establish your needs, the sooner we can make suitable adjustments to meet your needs.

Fees and Batells

Batells are the termly bills for accommodation costs, and will also include any other costs incurred by you at College during the previous term. On arrival in October you will be emailed your first Batells bill which will include the fees (unless you have a Tuition Fee Loan), the accommodation and the catering costs for your first term. Details of these costs can be found on the accommodation page. Your Batells statement will also include a £100 deposit, shown as ‘Caution money’, which will be held on account until you leave. Batells must always be paid by the end of the first week of term and your first bill will be due by Friday 18 October 2024. The preferred method of payment is by Flywire – https://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/batells-payment-portal/.

What to bring?

The Freshers’ pack sent to you in August will contain some information from the JCR with recommendations on what items to bring with you. You will be able to contact the JCR Freshers’ Rep in advance if you have any questions – see the JCR website for details and find out more about undergraduate life at Magdalen from their Alternative Prospectus.
