I read law at Oxford and Paris II (MA; DPhil), as well as Harvard Law School (LL.M.) Before re-joining Magdalen as a Law Fellow in 2014, I had been a Fellow at St John’s College, Oxford, and a Stipendiary Lecturer at Jesus College, Oxford. I have also held visiting teaching and/or research positions at institutions including UCL, Yale Law School, the University of Vienna, the Max Planck Institute Hamburg, Renmin Law School Beijing, and Hong Kong University.
I am Deputy Director of the Faculty’s Institute of European and Comparative Law, where I oversee our Course II (Erasmus) programme as Director of Undergraduate Exchange Programmes.
My college teaching covers Constitutional Law (for Law Mods) and European Union Law (FHS) – some of the most dynamic and interesting subjects in Oxford’s undergraduate syllabus, with recent developments in the United Kingdom and beyond. My faculty teaching comprises lectures in EU Law and Labour law (FHS); I am also involved in the teaching of Law and Computer Science, as well as Human Rights at Work (BCL/MJur). I have received a University Teaching Excellence Award in the Social Sciences Division, as well as Magdalen’s Apgar Prize.
I am the College’s Advisor for incoming law graduate students (BCL and DPhil).
My principal research interests are Artificial Intelligence, innovation policy, and the future of work. From April 2021, I will lead a five-year research project funded by a €1.5m European Research Council (ERC) grant, bringing together a team of computer scientists, lawyers, and sociologists in exploring the legal regulation of algorithmic management: the rise of artificial intelligence in replacing traditional management functions, from hiring and managing workers to firing them. My research on innovation policy and labour market regulation is frequently drawn on by governments and international organisations, and has been cited by courts, policy documents, and news organisations in multiple jurisdictions. Since 2018, I have also been a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council.
Together with Professor Abi Adams-Prassl of the Oxford Department of Economics, I write on the law and economics of fragmenting labour markets and access to justice. Our work has been recognised by a number of prizes, including the Modern Law Review’s Wedderburn Prize, an O2RB Excellence in Impact Award, and an ESRC Outstanding Impact in Public Policy Prize.
I am one of the editors of The Contract of Employment (OUP 2016), and an editor of Chitty on Contracts (34th ed, Sweet & Maxwell 2021). My work in European law includes co-editing the EU Law in the Member States Series (Hart) with Advocate General Michal Bobek.
