Byron Byrne has degrees in Civil Engineering and Commerce from the University of Western Australia, followed by a DPhil at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. His academic career has been developed in the Engineering Department at Oxford where he currently holds the Ørsted / Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Advanced Geotechnical Design. His research focuses on geotechnical engineering for offshore wind and other offshore renewable energy structures. He works collaboratively with industry to solve practical problems applying experimental work, at both laboratory scale and larger scale in the field, theoretical analysis and computational techniques, to develop simplified design methods for the engineer. Much of his work is applied to offshore wind farms around the UK, Europe and in other parts of the world. He routinely provides specialist advice to the industry and is a Fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Professor Byrne has simultaneously pursued interests in management and finance and is currently appointed at Magdalen College as Investment Advisor to work with the Bursar on Endowment Management. He has been a Director and involved with the management and development of The Oxford Science Park since 2002. Prior to his current appointment at Magdalen College he was a Fellow at St Catherine’s College, including as Tutorial Fellow in Engineering Science (2005 to 2018) and Finance Bursar (2020 to 2025). From 2000 to 2003 he was a Fellow by Examination in Engineering Science at Magdalen College.
