Background

After graduating from Oxford (University College) with a 1st class degree in Engineering Science in 1966 I worked as a structural engineer with Ove Arup and Partners four years, gaining my professional qualifications (MICE) and completing a part-time MEng degree at Glasgow University. I then spent four years at Cambridge University as a research student and was awarded my PhD. I then returned to industry and spent five years as a consulting Geotechnical Engineer with Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick and Partners and Golder Associates, with spells in Ireland and Iraq, leading up to my Oxford appointment. In 1997 I returned to industry with the Geotechnical Consulting Group, for whom I am still a Senior Consultant after retiring from Partnership.
