In collaboration with the Council for At Risk Academics (Cara) Magdalen wishes to offer a two-year Fellowship to an academic at immediate risk in their home country, to enable them to escape to a place of safety to continue their work, by providing accommodation and funding (to include their family) as well as membership of the Senior Common Room.
Cara helps academics who are being forced to flee their home country by the risk of imminent imprisonment, injury or death, and works with them to find them temporary refuge in universities and research institutions until they can one day return home to help re-build better, safer societies. It was founded in 1933 in response to Hitler’s decision to expel hundreds of leading scholars from German universities on racial grounds, and many of these academics ended up at Oxford. Today Cara’s Fellowship Programme works in partnership with a network of 125 UK universities, including Oxford. It is the leading organisation of its type based in Europe, and unique in its focus on helping those who are still in immediate danger, rather than already in exile, and in providing 2- or 3-year awards as standard. Experience shows that Cara Fellows who manage to return home feel much better connected and are empowered to act as agents of change, sharing their newly-gained knowledge, concepts, materials and approaches with students and colleagues. Returning Fellows are also well-placed to play a key link role in the future between their colleagues and international counterparts, at both an individual and institutional level.
The cost to Magdalen of hosting a Fellow with their family for two years is £80,000. If you are able to offer your support please contact us.
All contributions of any size to the Cara Fellowship fund will make a difference.
