Dr Steven Dierksmeier

Subject: Experimental Psychology

Academic position: Lecturer I in Experimental Psychology

Background

I obtained my BA in Medical Sciences and BM BCh in Clinical Medicine from St Hugh’s College, Oxford. I work in the Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and read a DPhil in Pharmacology at Lincoln College, Oxford.

Research

My research previously focused on neuroinflammation after spinal cord injury and the role of APOE in Alzheimer’s disease. For my current project in the Department of Pharmacology, I’m assessing the interface of neuroinflammation and synaptic plasticity in Alzheimer’s disease. Many identified risk factors for sporadic Alzheimer’s disease are expressed on microglia but their impact on synapse physiology, the best correlator of clinically relevant cognitive decline, remains unclear. I hope to drive molecular understanding of the pathophysiology to enable new therapeutic interventions for patients.

Teaching

I tutor undergraduates in Neurophysiology and also teach medical students at St Hugh’s College.
