The Importance of Being Earnest

26 May 2016

The Magdalen Players presented Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest in the fourth week of Trinity term in the President’s Garden. The Director was Edward McBarnet and the Producer Issy Newell. All the performances were sold out and they were very well received.

The play followed on from  an exhibition of Oscar Wilde manuscripts, letters and books in the Old Library. In addition, the Benefactors’ Weekend was treated to an Oscar Wilde symposium featuring a talk by Merlin Holland, Oscar Wilde’s grandson. Oscar Wilde himself was a student at Magdalen from 1874 to 1878.
