Magdalen Celebrates Acquisition of John Dowland Music Books

26 April 2016

A  study day and concert  has been arranged on Wednesday 4 May to celebrate Magdalen College’s acquisition of John Dowland’s music books (all his major works: the three books of Songs or Ayres and Lachrimae, published between 1600 and 1604). They were once owned by Sir Charles Somerset (1587/8–1665), a Magdalen alumnus, and music collector. The purchase was made with the help of the Breslauer Foundation, the Mark Loveday Charitable Trust, the Friends of the National Libraries, and the Scott-Wesley Bequest. The study day and concert are funded by the College’s Annual Fund, which has been established to benefit Magdalen students, who are particularly invited to participate.

To register for the free  study day and/or concert, please contact: Professor Christian Thomas Leitmeir (christian.leitmeir@magd.ox.ac.uk)
