Maddy in Magdalen

Maddy

Maddy is a second-year student studying English Language and Literature. When her financial situation changed suddenly, the Student Support Fund helped Maddy to continue her studies.

I found the process of settling in during my first year much easier than I expected. I met a wonderful group of people on my floor, and we got along really well. My cohort were lucky enough to have one-on-one tutorials which, though daunting at first, have become some of my favourite parts of my degree and of life at Magdalen. Looking back, I am proud to have risen to the challenge.

I have long been fascinated by Victorian literature, which first sparked my interest in studying English. During my first year here, I especially enjoyed the Victorian module, where I was introduced to a body of poetry written by the working class and industrial labourers. This movement challenged the traditional notion of poetry as the preserve of high culture and class, embodying instead the spirit of rebellion.

One of my favourite memories at Magdalen is attending midnight mass in the gorgeous College Chapel. It was around Christmas time, and many people – regardless of their religious background – gathered in the Chapel at midnight to enjoy the Choir’s singing together. I have never experienced anything like it before.

Coming from a single-parent, low-income family, the Student Support Fund has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. Although I didn’t need the funding when I first arrived, I always knew it was there if I ever did. When my financial situation changed suddenly, I was faced with the scary possibility of not being able to afford to finish my degree.

The wonderful Student Support team treated me with such kindness and understanding that they made the process of seeking financial support feel much more comfortable and less intimidating than I expected. The funding relieved my financial stress and allowed me to put more of my time and attention into my degree. Before, I spent so much time worrying about money that I often had to say no to social events or activities to stay within my budget. Now, I have the freedom to fully participate in College life without the constant worry. I am deeply grateful to the alumni whose generosity makes this possible.
