Waynflete update

Digger at Waynflete development

07 January 2026

The Waynflete has gone. Although it was never universally admired – famously dismissed as a “monster” by alumnus Sir John Betjeman – it held a special place in the hearts of generations of graduates. We bid the ‘flete a fond farewell. Thank you.

The old Waynflete Building may no longer exist in its familiar form, but it will live on in the new development. The vast mound of rubble that now occupies almost the entire site will be crushed over the coming months and incorporated into the foundations of the new Waynflete Quad.

Watch a video of the site below.

Most of the site has already been levelled, although a few areas still require further work.

The rear of St Clement’s is having its foundations removed. A structural engineer will ensure that everything is as it should be, and if anything of historical interest is discovered, an archaeological team will investigate and record the findings.

SSE is set to remove a substation from the site, and the site office will be relocated from the remaining St Clement’s buildings to portacabins on the main site.

Unfortunately, due to restricted space on site, the time-lapse camera has been removed for a couple of months. We hope to have it back in place in the spring to begin capturing the exciting building phase.
