Waynflete Quad update

Digger on the fourth floor of the Waynflete during demolition

03 September 2025

And we’re off!

Demolition work on the main Waynflete Building has begun, and you can watch it all unfold over the coming months on our time-lapse camera below.

As you can see, the top two floors of the old Waynflete have already been removed. Much of the work was carried out by a digger that was craned into place a couple of weeks ago. And if you thought the image at the top of this article was taken at ground level, think again. It was actually shot three floors up!

Gilbert-Ash has been clearing and sorting the rubble for recycling since the demolition began. A tricky task given how small and enclosed the site is, surrounded by houses and public roads. Dust screens have been installed to minimise disruption to neighbours, and water is being sprayed over the rubble to keep dust levels down. If progress continues at this pace, Gilbert-Ash hopes to have the building down by Christmas. You can see a video of the site below.

Alongside the demolition, historical and archaeological investigations are also underway. Walls have been uncovered in the gardens of the main site, and the St Clements buildings contain some interesting architectural features that will need further inspection. We’ll keep you updated as more discoveries are made.
