Waynflete Quad update

A narrow, dimly lit corridor in the Waynflete building leads to a partially demolished bathroom. The doorway’s plaster and bricks are broken away, exposing rough edges and debris scattered across the floor. Light from two small windows in the tiled bathroom illuminates the scene.

Work on the new Waynflete Quad is now well underway.

Since bidding a fond farewell to the old ‘Flete in June, Sainsbury’s has closed, scaffolding has gone up, and the whole building has been wrapped in protective sheeting.

Our contractors, Gilbert Ash, took possession of the site back in July, and the process of stripping the inside of the building is now almost complete. Fixtures and fittings have been removed, some internal walls have been taken down, and a specialist team is on site removing the asbestos. It’s strange to see a place that has been home to so many students stripped back to its bare bones. See the video of how it looks now below.

The demolition of the external structure of the Waynflete building will begin from the week beginning 20 October. Gilbert Ash plan to deconstruct the building floor by floor, and slowly lower it to the ground.

Work to remove 12 & 13 York Place and 10A/10B St Clement’s Street is almost finished, and the completion date for the demolition contract is end of February next year.

Sustainability has always been an important part of the Waynflete Quad development. That’s why Gilbert Ash will make sure that 70% by volume (or 80% by weight) of non-hazardous, non-demolition waste, and 80% by volume (90% by weight) of demolition waste, will be recycled.

The exciting construction stage will begin in early spring, and the new Waynflete Quad will be ready for use by students, staff, alumni, and the local community in 2028. We can’t wait.

We’ll keep you updated throughout the process with videos, interviews, and stories.
