Waynflete Fellow Mark Loveday

06 September 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce that Waynflete Fellow Mark Loveday died peacefully at his home on Wednesday 4th September after his long battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

Mark read Modern History at Magdalen in 1962-5 and was elected to a Waynflete Fellowship in 2012 in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the College. He served as a trustee on the Magdalen College Development Trust for 37 years from 1982 to 2019, chairing it from 2006-2016, as well as sitting on the Magdalen Investment Committee 1994-2006. He was a member of the University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Guild in recognition of his support of the Collegiate University, and received a Distinguished Friend of Oxford award in 2012. The Loveday family connection with Magdalen dates back three centuries.

Mark joined City stockbroking firm Cazenove in 1966 and became Senior Partner in 1994 until his retirement in 2001, when he became Director and then Chairman of the Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust, a position he held for almost ten years. He was a Director and subsequently Trustee of Grosvenor Estate from 1998 to 2008 when he became Chairman of the Grosvenor Pension Plan. He was a Fellow of Winchester College, a Freeman of the City of London, and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Skinners, as well as a former Advisory Board member to The Sixteen, a world-leading English choir and period-instrument orchestra.

Our condolences go to his widow Liza and two children. A memorial will be held in London later in the year.
