Huge congratulations to Magdalen Fellow in Engineering, Professor Constantin Coussios OBE, on the historic $1.5 billion acquisition of his company – co-founded with transplant surgeon Professor Peter Friend – OrganOx. The deal with Terumo Corporation is the largest for a University of Oxford spinout to date.
OrganOx has completely revolutionised organ transplantation with its pioneering technology that keeps donor organs functioning outside the body. This breakthrough dramatically increases the number of viable organs available, saving thousands of lives and recently earning the prestigious MacRobert Award for engineering innovation.
The company’s pioneering technology, known as Normothermic Machine Perfusion (NMP), preserves donor organs by keeping them functioning outside the body. By circulating warm, oxygenated fluid, the system mimics the conditions of the human body, allowing clinicians to assess organ function in real time. This breakthrough has dramatically increased the number of viable organs available for transplant, saving countless lives and reducing the strain on emergency surgical teams. To date, OrganOx systems have been used in over 6,000 transplants worldwide.
Professor Coussios credited the success to a deep collaboration between engineering and clinical science aimed at solving one of transplantation’s greatest challenges.
