Magdalen Fellow Professor Zhong You and his research group have developed a pioneering new treatment for glaucoma.
The team created a microstent with a unique shape that allows it to expand in the eye and reduce excessive fluid buildup, which causes the most common form of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma.
Initial trials showed that the microstent lowered eye pressure in less than a month with minimal inflammation and scarring. It also achieved a greater reduction in eye pressure than standard tubular implants.
The study has been published in The Innovation, Cell Press.
