Magdalen Fellow Professor Robert Douglas-Fairhurst and Waynflete Fellow Dr Jen Gaudiani have recently published new books.

Robert’s book, Look Closer: How to Get More Out of Reading, is both a celebration of the works that have shaped him, from Wuthering Heights and Dracula to short stories and comics, and a guide to the simple techniques that can help us slow down and rediscover the pleasures of reading.

Stephen Fry called it “the best book about reading I have read for a very long time,” while Natalie Haynes described it as “a glittering gem of a book.”

Robert is a Professor of English Language and Literature with more than twenty years of teaching experience. His other books include, The Story of Alice: Lewis Carroll and The Secret History of Wonderland, Becoming Dickens: The Invention of a Novelist, and Metamorphosis: A Life in Pieces.

Jen’s book Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders and Undernutrition, 2nd ed expands on her acclaimed first edition. It introduces updated material on “unmeasurable” medical issues such as mast cell activation syndrome and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, explores the role of (peri)menopause, and highlights specific populations at increased risk for undernutrition, including individuals with PTSD, OCD, and ADHD.

Written for patients, families, and clinicians, Jen’s book aims to empower, educate, and ultimately improve the quality of care.

Jen is the Founder and Medical Director of the Gaudiani Clinic, an outpatient clinic specialising in the medical complications of eating disorders. She is an alumna of Harvard, Boston University, and Yale, was elected  to a Waynflete Fellowship earlier this year.
