We are proud to announce the launch of the Sir Guenter Treitel Scholarship Fund. Each year, three Sir Guenter Treitel Scholars will be provided with full funding (fees and maintenance) to study the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at Magdalen College. Combined with the existing Oxford-Feltham Scholarship and the Magdalen Hong Kong Scholarship, this brings the total number of full scholarships for BCL students studying at the College to five.
The Sir Guenter Treitel Scholarship is made possible through an initial bequest from Sir Guenter Treitel, who read for the BA in Jurisprudence and the BCL at Magdalen, and was later a Fellow and Tutor in Law (1954–1979) at the College, before taking up the Vinerian Professorship of English Law at All Souls. It is also supported by the generous donations from our alumni. Magdalen has agreed to provide 50% matched funding for each scholarship from the College’s general endowment, so as to maximise the impact of the scholarships.
Dinah Rose KC, President of the College, said, “Magdalen is delighted to celebrate the memory of the great Professor Treitel by offering these opportunities to students to study for the BCL at Magdalen. Magdalen is committed to expanding the provision of graduate study and research, and we are privileged to be able to join in partnership with our alumni to fund these new scholarships.”
Prof Jordan English, one of the College’s Tutorial Fellows in Law, also commented, “These scholarships are a really exciting opportunity for Magdalen. Not only do we get to celebrate Sir Guenter Treitel—one of the best English contract lawyers there has ever been—and his lasting legacy, we also get to partner with alumni to provide meaningful opportunities for students to study at Oxford, who otherwise might not be able to come. We want the best and brightest to study at Magdalen, irrespective of their financial background. These scholarships help us to achieve that.”
The scholarships form part of the College’s wider strategy to increase the number of graduate student scholarships. In addition to endowed scholarships, the College in 2026–27 will be contributing £1.3 million from its general endowment income to fund graduate scholarships for students studying at Magdalen.
