Magdalen College has enjoyed an outstanding year in Law, with students achieving exceptional examination results, winning the University’s top prizes, and continuing the College’s long tradition of success in international mooting.
This year’s Final Honour School results saw six Firsts and four upper seconds from Magdalen’s ten graduating law students. The cohort also secured an extraordinary collection of University prizes.
Kabir Suri finished first, winning the Wronker Prize outright, as well as the Gibbs Prize and prizes in Trusts, Public International Law and Roman Law (Delict).
“Even superlatives are out of order for those I’ve had the fortune of crossing paths with at Magdalen,” said Kabir. “So to my tutors, peers, and family – along with the heavy dose of luck I benefited from – thank you.
“It was a joy to soak up the brilliance I was surrounded by (and the views of the deer!) from my second home, the Den (Magdalen’s Law Library).”
Daire O’Callaghan won the prizes for Contract and Competition Law and Policy, while Ilse Orson-Jones and Kit Fenn shared the Jessup Moot Prize.
Magdalen students continue to represent Oxford in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, with Calum Innes, Ines Bescond, and Kaleb Teo selected for the University’s 2026–27 team. All three students achieved a Distinction in Law Moderations, with Calum Innes sharing the Law Faculty Prize for Overall Best Performanceand the prize for Criminal Law.
At postgraduate level, James Gunn was joint winner of the Vinerian Scholarship for the top-performing Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) student, as well as winning prizes in Law and Society in Medieval England and Restitution, and Lachlan Muir received the top mark for Commercial Remedies.
James was supported by Magdalen’s John Feltham Scholarship, continuing a remarkable record of success that includes last year’s scholarship recipient and Vinerian Scholar, Jake Emerson.
Lachlan Muir also received the top mark for Commercial Remedies.
The College’s commitment to widening participation is also reflected in the success of its students. Will Cann, who attended Magdalen’s Year 12 Law Summer School, graduated with a First and secured a pupillage while still an undergraduate. Asirini Ranasinghe (Parakrama) also achieved a First and will remain at Magdalen to read for the BCL on a full University scholarship.
These achievements reinforce Magdalen’s position as Oxford’s leading college for law and, as the College seeks to expand scholarship support for BCL students, demonstrate the lasting impact of investing in exceptional legal talent.
