Justice Niamh Hyland appointed to the Supreme Court of Ireland

Magdalen alumna Justice Niamh Hyland (1989) has recently been appointed to the Supreme Court of Ireland. She made her judicial declaration on Friday 24 April in a ceremony overseen by Chief Justice O’Donnell. It took place in a Supreme Court filled with family, friends, and colleagues to mark the occasion.

Justice Hyland was educated at Trinity College Dublin, Magdalen College, Oxford, where she was awarded a Bachelor of Civil Law, and the Honourable Society of King’s Inns.

She’s a noted expert in EU and regulatory law. Early in her career, she served as the Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Law at Trinity. She also spent time in Luxembourg as a référendaire at the Court of First Instance.

She was called to the Bar of Ireland in 1994. In 2012, she took silk. Her judicial career began with an appointment to the High Court Bench in 2019. Since 2024, she also served on the Court of Appeal immediately before her appointment to the Supreme Court this year.
