Is the social media ban protection or exclusion?

Magdalen alumna Dr Victoria Nash (1991), Associate Professor and Senior Policy Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, warns that a social media ban risks leaving teenagers ‘protected’ but disempowered.

While acknowledging the serious harms that can arise for some young people at the hands of irresponsible social media companies, Dr Nash argues that, rather than punishing and excluding young people, we should demand full platform compliance with existing laws, provide rich and inspiring online content, and invest in excellent digital literacy education.
