Magdalen is delighted to announce that Dr Tim Hunter (1985) has been appointed Keeper of Collections, taking up the role this year following the retirement of Professor John Nightingale.

Dr Hunter read Modern History at Magdalen, graduating with first class honours in 1988, before completing an MA with Distinction (1989) and a DPhil (1992) in History of Art. He tutored at University College, Oxford, and worked as Assistant Curator in the Ashmolean Museum’s Department of Western Art, where he helped redisplay the Silver Collection.

He then spent sixteen years at Christie’s, rising to Senior Director of Old Master & British Pictures, before founding the art consultancy Venator Fine Art. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, he advises the Arts Council and has been an honorary member of the College’s Senior Common Room since 2011.

Dr Hunter is already well known to the College community. He has spoken on the Magdalen picture collection and on the Hall portraits at the Benefactors’ Dinner, and he is currently preparing a catalogue of the College’s pictures.
