Dinah Rose in conversation with Lord Sumption

05 March 2024

President Dinah Rose KC was in conversation with the Rt Hon Lord Sumption OBE, FSA, FRHistS, KC, PC at Burlington House recently, the historical setting of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

Over 100 alumni attended the event which proved to be one of our most popular – tickets sold out in just 48 hours!

Lord Sumption (1967) is a medieval historian, barrister, and retired Justice of the Supreme Court. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and an author of several legal and historical works, including the celebrated five-volume history of the Hundred Years War. Lord Sumption came to College in 1967 and was elected Fellow by Examination at Magdalen when he graduated.

Dinah and Lord Sumption reminisced about their respective time at Magdalen, discussed their shared subject of modern history and their legal careers, and touched on a few recent court cases.

They also talked about Lord Sumption’s most recent volume of The Hundred Years War: Triumph and Illusion which tells the story of the collapse of the English dream of conquest.

The event ended with a Q&A when Lord Sumption answered a number of professional and personal questions with thoughtfulness, good-humour, and candour.
