27 February 2026

The King recently awarded Magdalen alumnus Ben Goldacre (1992) a Queen Elizabeth Prize for Higher and Further Education at a ceremony at St James’s Palace. The Prize was given in recognition of the global impact of the OpenSAFELY platform.

OpenSAFELY was created by Ben and his team at the Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic to help answer urgent questions about risk factors and vaccine effectiveness. It pioneered a new secure way to access NHS GP data at scale, making vital research possible while strengthening patient privacy protections.

The Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Higher and Further Education is given in recognition of outstanding work at UK universities and colleges.

The Queen, The Princess Royal, and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester joined the presentation ceremony.
