Another successful year for Law at Magdalen Programme

14 September 2022

Over 70 pupils took part in our fourth Law at Magdalen Programme. Half of the budding young Law students stayed at Magdalen for a three-day residential, whilst the other half took part online.

Year 12 students from disadvantaged backgrounds across the UK, who had been carefully selected from almost 100 applications, travelled to Magdalen during their summer holiday for three days of activities intended to give them insights into studying Law, and support in their applications.

The programme was delivered by the College Outreach Officers Nuala Marshall and Amy Forbes, Law tutors Professors Joe Sampson, Roderick Bagshaw, and Katharine Grevling, along with four current Law undergraduates studying at Magdalen.

In-person participants had tours of Magdalen and Oxford, taster lectures and classes by the Law tutors, and sessions on the admissions process. They were even given demonstration Law interviews, thanks to student helper Annii who shared her own interview experience.

The students who joined the online programme had a similar timetable, with a recorded tour in the place of walking around the College.

Feedback from the programme was overwhelmingly positive, with multiple participants getting in touch to say how much they’d enjoyed themselves and how valuable the experience had been.

I really enjoyed the program and the sessions. The staff and student helpers were kind and helpful, and the professors were all great! I made loads of new friends too! Thank you again for this amazing residential.

The Outreach team and Law tutors were very pleased to be able to offer the in-person residential again after two years of the programme being entirely virtual, and plan to continue the event in future years.

Applications for the 2023 residential will open in May 2023 and will be advertised on the Magdalen website here.

This has truly been eye-opening. I would even go as far as saying life-changing. Every single moment of the residential was truly perfect. I feel so lucky to have had such an experience.
