Oliver Johann Ewy (2019) features in a new film nominated for a Golden Lion, the highest prize given at the Venice Film Festival.

Oliver, who studied History of Art at Magdalen, plays Tenente Medico in Lubo, a historical film adaptation of the Italian novel Il Seminatore by Mario Cavatore.

The story begins in Switzerland in 1939 when Lubo Moser, who is of Yenish descent, is called up for military service. He’s later joined by his cousin who tells him that the police have taken his children as part of the national re-education programme – Kinder der Landstrasse ‘Children of the Road’ – based on the principles of eugenics.

This is not the first time Oliver has worked with Lubo director Giorgio Diritti. In 2020, he played the lead in Volevo Nascondermi, which won major Italian film awards and made it into the Italian shortlist for the American Golden Globes Awards.

“I remember Magdalen with great pleasure,” said Oliver. “I will never forget the extraordinary aesthetics of this wonderful place and the unique combination of past, present, and future.”
