Waynflete’s 800: Leah Tether and David Rundle in discussion on the early history of Magdalen College Library

There is a tradition in Magdalen that its Founder, William Waynflete, bishop of Winchester, endowed the new college not only with lands and buildings but also with books to the number of eight hundred. That figure is so high that it has generated significant scepticism. Is the 800 simply a college myth? In this discussion, Prof. Tether and Dr Rundle will take different but complementary approaches to the evidence to review the question and consider its wider implications.
