Talk in London from Prof Harvey Whitehouse: Inheritance

Event type

12 June 2024

Join us for a talk at the London Review Bookshop on Wednesday 12th June 2024 when Professor Harvey Whitehouse (Professorial Fellow in Anthropology at Magdalen and Director of the Centre for the Study of Social Cohesion) will discuss his latest book ‘Inheritance: The Evolutionary Origins of the Modern World’ with Dr Martha Newson (Research Affiliate at the Centre for the Study of Social Cohesion).

Every human being is endowed with an inheritance. A set of ancient biases – forged by natural selection and fine-tuned by millennia of culture – that shape every facet of our behaviour.

For countless generations, this inheritance has been taking us to ever greater heights but now, for the first time, it is failing us. Suddenly, we find ourselves on a path to destruction.

Inheritance offers a sweeping account of how our inheritance has shaped humanity’s past and future. By understanding our ancient inheritance we can solve our thorniest modern problems, whether violent extremism, political polarisation or environmental catastrophe. The result is a powerful new perspective on the human journey; one that transforms our understanding of where we have been and where we are going.

The interview includes a Q&A and reception with an opportunity to buy the book. You are welcome to bring a guest.
