It’s Fresher’s week! How did 0th week come around so fast? WELCOME to all of our fresher’s if you’re looking for some advice, we asked this year’s graduates, and something a lot of people said was this:

Get stuck in to everything Oxford has to offer! Join a club, start a sport, check out the newspaper. There are a million things you can try - so try as many as you can 🥹

And because they wouldn’t stop illegally smuggling sausages in their togas, some people got sick, and that’s why we have the word botulism. It derives from the word botulus… the Latin word for sausage.

The history of funfairs in the uk is pretty interesting. Do you know why September is basically National Fun Fair Month?

It’s basically a blend of medieval economic systems and modern advocacy.

Historically, September was the operational engine of the British agriculture. Yes the harvest is safely in, and harvest wages have been paid, but this month is when everything else gets sorted so the next cycle can begin. Land leases are paid at Michaelmas (around 29th September), hiring fairs are held so that everyone can get a new job for the year, and there’s plenty of food to go around.

These huge fairs had a problem. How do you entertain all those people trying to trade, work, pay their bills, and get new jobs?

Well, people started setting up side-shows, games, early mechanic rides. Iconic fun fairs just like St Giles Fair grew directly out of these hiring fairs. Even as formal labour markets moved elsewhere, these fun fairs remain.

So as the fair packs up and travels on from Oxford and comes maybe to a town near you, remember you’re taking part in something that’s hundreds of years old. And if you think that’s fascinating, maybe you should study history here.
