Undergraduate
Magdalen College offers some of the best accommodation available in Oxford and all undergraduates are guaranteed single College accommodation throughout their degree.
In practice, first year undergraduates are accommodated either in the Waynflete Building or in High Street and Longwall Street properties, located outside the College walls, about a 5 minute walk from the College. Second and third year undergraduates mainly reside ‘inside-walls’, in Grove Buildings, New Building, Cloisters Attic, St Swithun’s Quad, Longwall Quad and Chaplain’s Quad, but also in High Street and Longwall Street properties.
Magdalen charges a flat daily rate for all undergraduate rooms, which for 2023-24 is £27.25. Since 2015-2016, the college, through its own resources and the Student Support Fund, has provided a subsidy to keep room rates affordable for all students. This subsidization aims to keep rates at around the cross-collegiate median for undergraduate accommodation.
Terms are 59 nights each, so the cost per term works out at £1,580.50 (Michaelmas Term) and £1,607.75 (Hilary and Trinity Term). The charge for College accommodation includes weekly cleaning, heating, electricity, bed linen (changed weekly), telephone port, and Ethernet connection and Wifi, and represents outstanding value for money. Approved Vacation Residence is charged at the same daily rate. Many of Magdalen’s rooms are situated in buildings of great beauty and architectural importance, and have stunning views.
All students who wish to occupy College accommodation will be required to sign a ‘Licence to Occupy’ before keys will be issued for the room or flat. The Universities UK approved code of practice for student accommodation sets out basic standards for student accommodation in Higher Educations Institutions, including the Oxford Colleges. Graduate
Graduates at Magdalen are guaranteed housing in their first two years (clinical medical students will be housed in their first and third years), provided they have requested it by 16 June in their year of entry, following receipt of confirmation of their place.
Graduates live “outside walls” in the new and modernised complex at Holywell Ford, in 1 Rose Lane, Cowley Place, the Daubeny Building and other High Street or Longwall Street properties.
Graduate rooms are provided on 9 month continuous licence period from 1 October to 30 June, with the option to request residence in July, August and September. Graduate rooms are graded and the daily charges for the 9 month period, and the discounted rates for the Long Vacation. The 9 month continuous licence period is divided into three amounts for the purposes of charging. We are unable to offer relief for any days out of residence. Accommodation for the Long Vacation period must be requested in advance on forms issued during Trinity Term (or prior to arrival for courses that begin early).
Charges for all rooms include weekly cleaning, heating, lighting, power, Ethernet port and Wifi, telephone port, bed linen (changed weekly) and an in-room mini-refrigerator and represents outstanding value for money.
Please note that pets cannot be housed in College accommodation.
