There is provision for two Organ Scholars at Magdalen College. Their role is to assist the Informator Choristarum in the training of the Choir. Candidates for Organ Scholarships are expected to have well developed skills in organ playing to at least ABRSM Grade 8. We will provide training for the Organists during their time here. In addition to regular service playing and conducting, there are opportunities for continuo playing, concerts, tours, recordings and collaboration with professional instrumental ensembles.
Organ Scholars are given accommodation with a keyboard to assist with practice and have regular access to the Chapel organ. The competition for organ awards takes place in Oxford in September (usually around 18th September). Candidates will usually be interviewed academically at the time of the September trials and must be applying to read Music. If you are considering applying to Magdalen College for an Organ Award, Daniel Hyde, Director of Music, is always pleased to meet with you informally for an audition and discussion. You are also welcome to attend services at any time during Full Term.
If you would like to arrange an informal audition, please contact the Choir PA on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Further information about applications for Organ Awards can be found on the University Admissions.
