Welfare

WELFARE AT MAGDALEN

University life can be demanding, and Magdalen College offers an extensive welfare support system for its members. There are various people in College who can help if you are having difficulties:

Emergencies

In case of a serious emergency, contact both Porter’s Lodge and emergency services (999):

Lodge Telephone                        01865 276000
Police (break-ins)                       08 458 505 505

Welfare Reps

Your welfare reps are available to provide peer support at any time, as well as information about other services as needed.

Kate Mitchell           kate.mitchell@magd.ox.ac.uk
Zachary Frankel       zachary.frankel@magd.ox.ac.uk

If you’re interested in getting in touch with an MCR member studying in a similar field to you, please let us know and we can arrange this.

StairWelfare and MCR Activities

An important support network during your time at Magdalen will be the people you live with. With this in mind, StairWelfare Week is a termly event in which you are encouraged (with some help from the MCR Committee) to catch up with the rest of your stairwell to enjoy a meal together.

The MCR runs numerous social events throughout term which are a great way to take a break from study and meet new people – come along to brunch on Sundays, Liquid Lounge on Friday evening, and various exchange/guest dinners.  For more details about the MCR's social events, click here or on the link to the left.

There is a weekly MCR yoga class during term time.  For current details of those classes, please contact one of the Welfare reps.

Health

Please inform the Lodge if you are ill, particularly if you are unable to leave your room. If you require first aid, the Lodge will be able to inform the nearest First Aider. Contact details for other health services are listed below. In case of injury, the Lodge is able to arrange taxi vouchers for transport to/from College/classes as needed.

College Nurse

Mrs Sue Salmon is the College Nurse: susan.salmon@magd.ox.ac.uk; telephone 01865-276081 (internal ext: 76 081). She is in her rooms in St Swithun’s VI from 9 – 10 am, 0th-9th weeks inclusive.

College Doctor

On arrival at Magdalen, the College will arrange registration with the College doctors:

http://www.27beaumontstreet.co.uk/

27 Beaumont Street
Oxford
OX1 2NR
Tel: 01865 311 500
Email: practice@gp-K84049.nhs.uk

The 27 Beaumont Street practice has both male and female practitioners.

Out-of-hours Service

Outside opening hours there is always a doctor on call for emergencies and urgent problems through the Oxford Emergency Medical Service (OXEMS). To use this service you should telephone 0845 345 8995. You may be asked to attend the OXEMS Centre at the St Bartholomews Medical Centre in Manzil Way, off Cowley Road.

Overseas Students

Students from overseas are eligible for free NHS treatment if they are in the country for a ‘settled purpose’, ie a full-time course of study, for a period of 6 months or more. Otherwise adequate health insurance will be required to cover private treatment.

However, if there is a pre-existing medical condition which may require hospital care, this may not always be covered, so it is recommended that in such cases private health insurance should be taken out. Also, if specialist treatment were sought for a non-urgent condition, it would be appropriate to seek private health insurance as NHS waiting lists can be longer than 6 months.

Accident & Emergency Department

This is located at the John Radcliffe Hospital and caters for acute emergencies such as broken limbs, sudden breathlessness, etc. Do not be surprised if you are expected to wait before you get medical attention – in busy periods this may be a number of hours.

Other

The MCR provides free condoms. We also supply free pregnancy and Chlamydia tests which can be (discreetly) pidged on request.

Safety

Attack alarms are available for all students in the Porters’ Lodge and are given freely. The Lodge also have a supply of drink testing kits. These fit easily into a handbag or pocket and are easy to use.

The University operates Nightbus, a safe and affordable means of transport late at night. Phone 07 714 44 5050 between 9pm and 3am Monday to Saturday, and 9pm to 1am on Sunday – the bus will pick you up and deliver you to any destination within the ring road, and all trips cost only £1.00. The scheme is open only to university members. Priority will be given to people who are alone, as the emphasis is on safety.

Counselling

College Advisor

Students should feel able to approach their College Advisor for pastoral help and advice. Your Advisor is here to monitor your progress throughout the academic year, discuss reports and be a source of academic support from someone in your own subject area.

Dean of Divinity

The Dean of Divinity (which is what we call the College Chaplain) is the Revd Dr Michael Piret and he is pastorally available to members of the College or of the congregation at any time. His room is in St. Swithun's Buildings, VII:4.

University Counselling

The University has a professionally-staffed, confidential Student Counselling Service for assistance with personal, emotional, social and academic problems. The Service is available free to all matriculated undergraduate and graduate members of the University, and never discloses information about the students it is seeing. Contact on 01865 270300 or reception@counserv.ox.ac.uk

Nightline

Nightline is a helpline run by students and for students. It operates at night from 8pm to 8am during term time. You can phone them on 01865 270270 (internal ext: 70270) or visit them at 16 Wellington Square. They can phone you back if you prefer.

The service they provide is confidential, impartial and non-judgemental, and there is no religious, political or social bias. You can ask to talk to a male or female volunteer; whichever makes you feel more comfortable, and you can talk for as long as you want.

Dr Christine Ferdinand is the College’s Women’s Advisor. She can be contacted on 01865 276 057 (internal ext: 76 057) or at christine.ferdinand@magd.ox.ac.uk.

Harassment

Katharine Grevling and Robert Douglas-Fairhurst are Magdalen’s Harassment Officers. They are freely available and you should approach them with any concerns you have in this regard.

Everyone has the right to live in an environment free from harassment. Harassment includes any form of unwarranted behaviour towards a person that affects that person's work or quality of life. Harassment might be a one-off incident or series of incidents and can take many different forms, including intimidation, bullying, unwarranted sexual advances, exclusion, or physical abuse. Examples of harassment include hostile behaviour based on a person's sex, sexual orientation, age, race, religion or disability. There is additional information about harassment at www.admin.ox.ac.uk/eop.

If you wish to contact someone external to the college and your department, you can contact the University’s Advisory Panel on Harassment confidentially on 01865 270 760 (internal ext: 70760) during normal office hours, or the student union advice service.
