StairWelfare and MCR Activities
An important support network during your time at Magdalen will be the people you live with. With this in mind, StairWelfare Week is a termly event in which you are encouraged (with some help from the MCR Committee) to catch up with the rest of your stairwell to enjoy a meal together.
The MCR runs numerous social events throughout term which are a great way to take a break from study and meet new people – come along to brunch on Sundays, Liquid Lounge on Friday evening, and various exchange/guest dinners. For more details about the MCR's social events, click here or on the link to the left.
There is a weekly MCR yoga class during term time. For current details of those classes, please contact one of the Welfare reps.
Health
Please inform the Lodge if you are ill, particularly if you are unable to leave your room. If you require first aid, the Lodge will be able to inform the nearest First Aider. Outside opening hours there is always a doctor on call for emergencies and urgent problems through the Oxford Emergency Medical Service (OXEMS). To use this service you should telephone 0845 345 8995. You may be asked to attend the OXEMS Centre at the St Bartholomews Medical Centre in
Overseas Students
Students from overseas are eligible for free NHS treatment if they are in the country for a ‘settled purpose’, ie a full-time course of study, for a period of 6 months or more. Otherwise adequate health insurance will be required to cover private treatment.
However, if there is a pre-existing medical condition which may require hospital care, this may not always be covered, so it is recommended that in such cases private health insurance should be taken out. Also, if specialist treatment were sought for a non-urgent condition, it would be appropriate to seek private health insurance as NHS waiting lists can be longer than 6 months.

Safety
Attack alarms are available for all students in the Porters’ Lodge and are given freely. The Lodge also have a supply of drink testing kits. These fit easily into a handbag or pocket and are easy to use.
The University operates Nightbus, a safe and affordable means of transport late at night. Phone 07 714 44 5050 between 9pm and 3am Monday to Saturday, and 9pm to 1am on Sunday – the bus will pick you up and deliver you to any destination within the ring road, and all trips cost only £1.00. The scheme is open only to university members. Priority will be given to people who are alone, as the emphasis is on safety.
Counselling
College Advisor
Students should feel able to approach their College Advisor for pastoral help and advice. Your Advisor is here to monitor your progress throughout the academic year, discuss reports and be a source of academic support from someone in your own subject area.
Dean of Divinity
The Dean of Divinity (which is what we call the College Chaplain) is the Revd Dr Michael Piret and he is pastorally available to members of the College or of the congregation at any time. His room is in St. Swithun's Buildings, VII:4.
University Counselling
The University has a professionally-staffed, confidential Student Counselling Service for assistance with personal, emotional, social and academic problems. The Service is available free to all matriculated undergraduate and graduate members of the University, and never discloses information about the students it is seeing. Contact on 01865 270300 or reception@counserv.ox.ac.uk
Nightline
