Social Events
The Magdalen MCR hosts a variety of social events throughout the year. In addition to the occasional Bop, some of our regular fixtures include:
Liquid Lounge
Every Friday night during term time, we run a drinks night from the MCR bar. It's a great chance to relax with your friends and unwind after a long week with cheap drinks, and it's also a great opportunity to meet new people that we invite from other college MCRs.
MCR Brunch
Every Sunday we host a wonderful brunch at 12pm in the MCR, for the astonishingly low cost of £3, batelled. Come along for great food (sausage, pancakes, bagels, eggs, fruit, smoked salmon, - the works!) and great company in your lovely MCR!
MCR Bops
We often throw Bops in the MCR, and Old Kitchen Bar, and we occasionallly join forces and combine with JCR events. Graduate communities at all of the Oxford colleges tend to be quite welcoming, so our social secretaries often organize trips to Bops at other Colleges as well.
Exchange Dinners
Exchange dinners consist of two dinners at Formal Hall, one at each college. There are usually pre-dinner drinks in the MCR, with wine provided for the dinner, and second deserts/drinks in the MCR following formal hall. This is a great opportunity to meet people from other colleges as well as visit other campuses!
MCR Guest Dinners
We run approximately two guest dinners per term, the most lavish of MCR events. They take place in the New Rooms, with the dress code black tie or national dress. The dinner consists of four courses including pudding and is followed by coffee and desert. The cost is £25 per person including alcohol. Each MCR member is allowed to bring two guests to each dinner. Keep an eye on your term card for dates of these events, not to be missed!
MCR Christmas Dinner and Summer Banquet
Our annual Christmas Dinner and MCR summer banquet are not to be missed! The Christmas dinner is a large formal dinner held in hall, with pre-dinner drinks and a Bop afterwards (~£14 with wine). The summer banquet, also held in hall late in Trinity term, is the largest MCR event of the year and the one occasion at which the whole MCR comes together - a larger version of MCR guest dinners (£25). May Morning
Magdalen College is host to one of the most famous Oxford traditions - every year at 6:00 am on 1 May, the Choir sings hymns from the top of the tower. While people generally gather in the streets outside the College to hear the singing, we have a champagne brunch inside the College in the Oscar Wilde Room from 5:15 a.m., to hear our choir in a more peaceful setting! Events are also usually planned for the night before May morning, as many choose to stay up all night to wait for the choir's performance!
Magdalen Commemoration Ball
Magdalen College is host to one of Oxford's white-tie commemoration balls, and is held every three years. The next Magdalen Ball, organized by a committee consisting of JCR and MCR members, will be held in 2009.
