Music, Art & Drama

Art & Drama

There are plenty of opportunities in Oxford to enjoy theatre and art. Magdalen college JCR and MCR run a joint Arts week in Trinity term celebrating the accomplishments of its students, with recitals, exhibits, and competitions. An annual photography competition in College selects photographs to appear in Magdalen publications.

In addition, the MCR Arts' Rep organizes regular (and subsidized!) trips to plays and exhibits around Oxford, though in past years we have organized trips farther afield. It's worth remembering that the student drama scene in Oxford is one of the best in Britain. Tickets for student shows at the Burton Taylor Theatre and the Kebel O'Reilly Theatre both sell through the Oxford Playhouse, while tickets for the Old Fire Station sell through the New Theatre. Tickets are very cheap for students at around £5. The Oxford Playhouse also has a student standby deal, with tickets purchased at substantial discount during the week of the play. Many classical organizations in Oxford also provide cheap student tickets, so keep an eye out for good events in the city!

Additionally, there are often recitals and concerts that occur in College throughout the academic year.

The Magdalen Players

It also produces a variety of plays throughout the academic year, culminating in the Magdalen College Garden Show in the Presidents Garden in Trinity Term. For more information about the Magdalen players, contact the current Presidents, Ashleigh Wheeler or Philippa Baines, via our website - www.magdalenplayers.co.uk
