Funding

Oxford Scholarships

There are many sources of funding available for graduate students at Magdalen and at Oxford University in general. Scholarships generally pay both University and College fees as well as provide a living stipend to cover costs of housing, and food. This page provides some initial information about scholarships from Oxford and other sources, and provides links for more information. For most of these scholarships, it is important to apply early! Oxford has four gathered fields of applicants, and your chances for receiving a scholarship are best if your application is received in an early gathered field, though some funding schemes can be applied for throughout the academic year.

The most comprehensive website containing scholarship and bursaries to study at Oxford University is http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/io/funding/index.shtml

Information on this website is relevant to:

  • International students seeking to study at Oxford University
  • EU/UK students seeking to study at Oxford University
  • Bursarial and scholarship assistance to EU/UK and international students already studying at Oxford.

Particularly popular sources of information listed on this website include:

  • ResearchResearch.com – An overview of discipline-specific funding opportunities world-wide. All members of Oxford University gain free access to this site.
  • Grants Register 2008 – this is available in hard copy only from the International Office but includes information on over 4,000 awards from 62 countries.

Furthermore, all students should pay note to financial assistance provided by Oxford University to graduates which is listed in the Magdalen College Information and Regulations for Members of the College 2008-2009 pages 19-21(pink book). Information on the following Oxford University scholarships are listed here:

  • University’s Committee on Student Hardship awards – for unforeseeable hardship
  • University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Fund – exceptional D.Phil students in the final stages of their work

For medical students, a wide range of funding is available through medical charities. The Tutor for Graduates has a list of these charities and advises on how to apply for them.

Finally, Oxford University provides financial assistance to current students in need in the form of the Access to Learning Fund (referred to as ALF). This provides discretionary financial assistance for students to help them access and remain in higher education, particularly those students who need financial help to meet extra costs that cannot be met from other sources of support. The Fund also helps to alleviate unexpected financial hardship.

You can apply to the Fund at any point during the academic year, including the long vacation. Students must fulfil the eligibility criteria that are provided on the application form, and any help received from the Fund is usually non-repayable. The Deans’ Secretary, Susan Burton has application forms, but the fund is administered by the Student Funding and International Office in the University Offices.
