Academic Resources in College
Computer Facilities, Accounts, and Mailists
There are three computer rooms available for student use in College, and one reserved exclusively for graduate students. Computer rooms in Cloisters Quad, St. Swithun's tower, and Hollywell Ford Staircase V all have computers for student use, as well as scanning and printing capabilities. The graduate computer room in Hollywell Ford also has a photocopier machine, though you must provide your own paper. Costs of printing are batelled to your account.
All new students have computer accounts created automatically by college (though activation might require a few days after your arrival). More information can be found at http://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/internal/it_stu_getting_started.shtml.
The MCR runs an e-mail mailing list which sends out information about activities, events, ballots and other information and reminers. It's important to check your herald e-mail regularly in order to keep updated about Magdalen events. To subscribe to the MCR mailing list, send an e-mail to magdmcr-subscribe@maillist.ox.ac.uk with nothing in the body of the text. You will then need to reply to the authentication message. If you have any queries please contact the MCR comp rep.
All graduate rooms have ethernet access, which must be set up through the Computer Office in St. Swithuns'. An application must be filled out upon arrival.
Libraries
While the Bodleian Library (aka “the Bod”) is Oxford’s main library and, as a copyright library, has virtually every book published in England, it does not provide 24-hour access, and is a non-lending library with strict copyright criteria (see www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/). Therefore, your college library collection is extremely important in providing resources as well as a good studying spot to augment resources available from the Bod or your departmental libraries.
Magdalen College has several libraries that are open to graduate use.
Magdalen New Library:
Found in Longwall Quad, just next to the High Street, the College library is a lending library operating on the Honor system, and can be used 24 hours a day. Entrance is once again with your Bod card, and the librarians are very friendly. Be sure to take a tour during your first week here. The New library has a vast student-led collection with a number of texts requested from past graduate and undergraduate students. If you think a particular text should be added to the College collection, you can request College to purchase it. Additionally, the New library has a large DVD collection available for student use.
Magdalen Law Library: This is located in the Grove Building, adjacent to Longwall Street. All law students are issued with a Law Library key and can access the Law Library 24 hours a day (handy for those doing the BCL). Similarly to the Bodleian, this is a non-lending library. There is, however, a photocopier for which you need to supply your own paper. A photocopy card will be issued to you by one of the Law Fellows.
Old Library: Rare books and manuscripts collection located in Cloisters' Quad adjacent to the President's Lodgings. Graduate students can access this library on Fridays during term time from 9:30am-5:00pm.
Daubeny Library: Primarily a reading room for graduate students.
McFarlane Library: Specialist history library.

The Oxford Public Library provides additional resources for students. The Central Library for Oxfordshire Studies is located near the Westgate Shopping Centre on Queens Street. It's free to join and allows lending. Proof of residency (bank statement) and photo ID are required to join, but registration is free.
