Robert Hardy (1925-2017)

4th August 2017

The College was very sad to learn that the actor Robert Hardy passed away on 3rd August 2017.  Robert came up to Magdalen as a Demy in 1944 to read English Literature under the tutelage of C. S. Lewis. His studies were interrupted by a period in the RAF, and he graduated from Magdalen in 1948.

Robert had a very distinguished acting career which started when he was at Magdalen and lasted over 70 years. He played the lead in many Shakespeare theatre productions and in a variety of films for both the big and small screens. He played Winston Churchill in several productions and his role in the BBC television series All Creatures Great and Small made him a household name.  He is probably best known to many for his most recent performance was as Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter film series. He was also an expert on the Longbow and wrote two books on the subject. Robert returned regularly to the College and often spoke at our events.
