Magdalen Library wins RIBA National Award

23rd June 2017

Magdalen’s prizewinning Longwall Library has now won the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) National Award.  This follows on from the  RIBA South East Regional Award and Conservation Award. The newly refurbished and extended Library was opened by Prince William in May 2016 and the architects were Wright and Wright.

The awards committee said, ‘The sensitive siting and conception of the new build to create the new entrance and reading rooms as a plinth, mean the college quad is activated, but not dominated, by the new buildings. The understated addition does not compete with, or harm the setting of the historic context, despite significantly adding to it. We heard several views from students, who explained the convenience, utility and enjoyment of the expanded facility.’
