Waynflete Professor of Physiology and Director of the Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour, Gero Miesenböck, has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant.

The Grant will support his research into the regulation and function of sleep. Professor Miesenböck aims to understand why we need to sleep by studying how the brain responds to sleep loss.

“I’m thrilled this worked out,” said Professor Miesenböck, “especially since this may have been the last chance for UK residents to apply.

“The ERC is one of the very few funding agencies that appreciate ‘the usefulness of useless knowledge’, to quote Abraham Flexner’s famous argument for curiosity-driven research.”

ERC Advanced Grants are awarded to researchers who are exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research, and who have a track record of research achievements in the last 10 years.

Congratulation to Professor Miesenböck, we will be following his research with great interest over the coming years.
