College Choir in residence to sing Holy Week services

13 April 2011

In 1997 we began reassembling the College Choir to sing services of the Easter Triduum, in such years as Easter falls sufficiently close to the end of Hilary Term – or the beginning of Trinity – to make it feasible. Before that, the Choir seems not to have sung Holy Week services in Chapel since 1919.

It all happens again this year, for the fifth time since 1997.

All Chapel services are open to the public and all are welcome:

MAUNDY THURSDAY (21 April)
7.00 pm: Solemn Eucharist of the Lord’s Supper
Ouseley, O Saviour of the world
Palestrina, Missa Brevis
Duruflé, Ubi caritas
Byrd, Lamentations

GOOD FRIDAY (22 April)
12.00 to 3.00 pm: The Three Hours’ Devotion
Led by the Rt Revd and Rt Hon. Lord Harries of Pentregarth
(Bishop of Oxford 1987-2006)

3.00 pm: The Good Friday Liturgy
Casals, O vos omnes
Anerio, Christus factus est
Victoria, Passion and Reproaches
John IV of Portugal, Crux fidelis
Byrd, Ave verum corpus

HOLY SATURDAY (23 April)
9.00 pm: The Great Vigil
and Celebration of the Resurrection Night
with First Eucharist of Easter
Mozart, Missa Brevis in D (K194)
Palestrina, Sicut cervus
Taverner, Dum transisset Sabbatum

(There are no sung services in Magdalen Chapel on Easter Day.)
