MC:F23/MS2 Notes and working papers for Wilson’s History of Magdalen
MC:F23/MS2-MS4 are all parts of Wilson’s working papers for his history of Magdalen College. They were each found separately bundled up, and are therefore catalogued separately. The contents of MC:F23/MS2 were found in an envelope labelled ‘College History Miscellaneous Notes mostly used or not worth using.’ They are as follows:
Sheet of paper with notes of various names and dates, some with the names of Colleges. The dates listed are between 1795-1840.

Letter from John Sedgwick (address Birdbrook Rectory, Halstead, Essex) to Wilson. Sedgwick suggests Wilson contact Moore to obtain information related to the Magdalen Eight of 1846.
MC:F23/MS2/4 23 February 1905
Letter from Dom. G. Morin (address Abbaye de Maredsous) to Wilson. Morin comments on a copy of Wilson’s edition of the Benedictional of Archbishop Robert of Jumièges that he received from the booksellers Harrison & Son. He congratulates Wilson on the book. The letter is in French.
Sheet of paper folded around 7 pages of notes. The sheet contains a note that on 20 April 1507, the College heard from Fox that John Veysy, archdeacon of Chester, had resigned. The notes contain information relating to Veysy’s election. There is a list of names, a list of numbers, and notes about a College Register.
List of the crew of Magdalen’s first ever Eight and their weights.

Letter from Herbert Hurst (address 6 Tackley Place) to Wilson. Hurst charges Wilson 10s. for the time he spent upon ‘the plan.’ He expresses his hopes for the quality of the ‘Magdalen book.’ The letter is in its original envelope.

Notes on various types of student and staff at Magdalen with some associated financial information. Notes towards the end of the document perhaps record decisions taken by the College: ‘Proposed to set aside £1000’ ‘Election of Demies’ ‘Abandon system of nomination’ ‘Examination’ ‘Praelectors.’

List of names, dates and notes on university careers of various demies and fellows of the 18th and 19th centuries, from 1782-1867. (1 page).
Rough list of dates, ranging from 1855-1883, and calculations with doodles. The list appears to count the numbers of students taking certain subjects in these years. (3 pages).
Notes concerning the Halls, statutes, and appointments to posts in the 16th and 17th centuries. Also calculations on the reverse. (2 pages).
List of names with dates ranging from 1801-1869. These appear to be award-winners, as they are listed under the headings ‘Ireland’, ‘Chancellors Verse’, and ‘Latin Essay.’ A list on the reverse has no heading.
List of names of late 18th and early 19th century architects with their dates. (1 page).
List of dates and events that occurred in College or were associated with Magdalen in these years, ranging from 1781- 1844. (2 pages). The list is attached to another list of College Orders, again a list of dates and events relating to the College finances or expenses in those years. The dates covered are 1811-1852. (2 pages).
List of dates with decisions made by the College in the years 1782-1829. (1 page).
Note about a decision made 26 July 1800 to give £10 to the Ashmolean Museum toward the purchase of a collection of minerals. (1 page).

Sheet listing some sort of results next to dates ranging from 1814-1826. (1 page).

Sheet with lists of dates, names of various Oxford colleges and numbers. There is a total column. On the reverse is an unfinished note about Waynflete All Saints church and the tomb of Bishop Waynflete’s father.
Sheet with a sentence fragment: ‘are ten, of whom one obtained a first class, while seven are placed in the fourth.’
