MC:P103 Photograph Album of J.H. Wilkinson (D. 1863–7)
John Henry Wilkinson (1844–1930), known as Jack, was the son of Matthew Wilkinson (the first Headmaster of Marlborough). He was educated at Winchester College, and then became a Demy at Magdalen in 1863–1867. He later became a teacher, working in preparatory schools. In 1873, he started a school at Tudor House, Cambridge Park, Westbury on Trym., and then in 1886 he built Waynflete School on Blackboys Hill, Clifton. After an outbreak of diphtheria at Clifton College in 1898 he moved the school to Woodcote House near Reading, and remained headmaster there until 1909. He was the author of School Management in Preparatory Schools (1900). During the First World War he assisted at various schools whose regular staff were at the front (information on Wilkinson’s life has been supplied by one of his great-great-grandchildren).
This photograph album was purchased by the College from a dealer (who had acquired it from another of Wilkinson’s descendants) in January 1999, and deposited with the archives as Acc. 99/7.
Recatalogued in July 2012.
