MC:P163 Papers of Henry Bensley Wells (1891-1967)
Henry Bensley Wells (always called Ben in these letters) was born in 1891 and attended Winchester College before coming to Magdalen as a Commoner in 1909–1913, where he got a Third in History. He coxed the Magdalen College First Eight in 1911–1913, the Blues boat in 1911–1914, and a Leander Eight which won the Olympic Regatta at Stockholm in 1912. After serving in the First World War, he became a barrister, and then a County Court Judge in 1934. He died in 1967.
The letters were given to the College archives by the recipient’s son, John Wells, himself an Old Member of Magdalen (C. 1946–1949), in May 2001 as Accession No. 01/108. The photograph album and photographs were donated by his sons John (mentioned above) and David Wells (C.1949-52) in the late 1980s and accessioned as 89/2.
