MC:P76 Papers of Sir Peter Smithers (1913-2006)
Sir Peter Henry Berry Otway Smithers (1913–2006), described in his article in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as “intelligence officer, politician, and gardener”, was a Demy at Magdalen from 1931-4. In addition to his other activites, Smithers also wrote a major biography of Joseph Addison (Demy 1689-97; Fellow 1697-1711). Of these documents, MC:P76/X1/1 was deposited with the archives in October 1996 as part of Accession No. 96/164 (a collection of ephemera collected by the President of Magdalen), MC:P76/C1/1 in October 2002 as Accession No. 02/259, and MC:P76/X1/2 in October 2006 as Accession No. 06/134.

Receipt issued to Sir Peter Smithers on his purchase of a Kneller portrait of Joseph Addison (which now hangs in the Hall of Magdalen College) dated 17 May 1956, with an enclosing letter to the President, dated 27 Oct 2002.
Pamphlet “A Reverie at Eighty”, by Sir Peter Smithers (D 1931–1934), comprising a brief autobiographical memoir by Sir Peter. It includes reminiscences of his time at Oxford, his war service, and his political career (he was M.P. for Winchester, and served in the Government).
