He had a long career with the Oxford University Press, serving a total of 36 years and holding the posts of Assistant Secretary to the Delegates of the Oxford University Press from 1911-19 (interrupted by war service with the Royal Garrison Artillery on the Salonica Front in southeastern Europe) and Secretary from 1919-42.
These papers were donated at various times by various individuals. The documents in MC:F49/X2 were donated by Magdalen’s Fellow Librarian, Dr. Christine Ferdinand, in May 2011. They were found by chance in a copy of A.D. Godley’s Reliquiae Vol. 1, which is now in the College Library (shelfmarked GODL-A (REL), and accessioned as 11/79. The items in MC:F49/X3 were donated in 1964 by W.M.M. Chapman on behalf of R.W. Chapman’s widow, but so not appear to have an accession number. It is not known how the other papers came to this collection.
Catalogued January 2014.
