MC:P148 Postcard from Osip Mandelstam
This document was originally written by the great Russian poet Osip Mandelstam for an actor, who later give it to Michael Liubimov, the director of the Tanganka Theatre of Moscow. He in turn gave it to Thelma Holt, the British theatre impresario, who in October 2000 gave it to Michael Romaine, a graduate student at Merton College, Oxford. Mr. Romaine then presented it to the President of Magdalen College who transferred it to the Archives in October 2000 as Accession No. 00/194.

Postcard of the Alexandrovsky and Pokrovsky monasteries, on the back of which is a quotation (translated into English) from one of Osip Mandelstam’s poems, written in Mandelstam’s own hand, and dated May 1935. The quotation opens “How dark it gets along the Kama”.
