MC:P229 Photograph Album of Malcolm Cuthbert Nokes (1897-1986)
This album was acquired from a dealer by the College in November 2003, and presented to the archives as Accession No. 03/194. Its provenance and earlier history remain unknown.
Although the album bears no indication of ownership, the identity of its owner can be deduced. Only one person appears in every photograph in the album, and another print of one picture – that of the Rugby XV for 1921/2 exists in the Archives with a full list of sitters (ref. PH/P/587). This shows that the person who appears in every picture was one Malcolm Cuthbert Nokes (1897–1986), a Commoner at Magdalen in 1919–22, for the 1922 edition of the Old Members’ Register shows that he threw the hammer for Oxford Inter-’Varsity Sports in 1921—which he can be seen doing on fol. 6 below—and was awarded a half-blue for swimming in 1919, and a blue for Athletics in 1920.
During the war, Nokes had served in France, first with the RGA (Royal Garrison Artillery) from June 1916–August 1918, and then with the RAF from September 1918–April 1919. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant, and was awarded the MC in August 1917. At Oxford, he first read the shortened course in Chemistry, in which he obtained a distinction in 1921. He remained at Magdalen to study for a BSc., which he received in 1923, and then he took his MA in 1931.
In later years he taught science at Malvern from 1922–46, acting as a housemaster there in 1932–40, and then at Harrow in 1946–57. He also published several books on science teaching. His career in athletics continued to prosper after leaving Magdalen: he won a bronze medal in the 1924 Olympics for hammer throwing (and is so far the only Briton to have won an Olympic medal in this sport), and in the 1928 Games he was the British team’s flagbearer. He also won the gold medal for hammer throwing in the 1930 Commonwealth Games, and won the British National Championships in this event every year in 1923–6.
According to records at Harrow, Nokes apparently worked for AERE Harwell (Isotope Division) in 1957–59, and then at the CENTO Institute of Nuclear Science in Tehran 1959–1966 and the Tehran University Institute of Nuclear Science in 1966–9. He died in 1986.
Catalogued in November 2003.
